Roller Champions, Ubisoft’s free roller derby game, returns with a closed alpha

Roller Champions will kick off a two-week closed alpha on Windows PC on March 11, Ubisoft announced today. The free-to-play, roller-derby-meets-Rocket-League multiplayer game was first announced during E3 2019 last summer.
The closed alpha will run from March 11 at 9 a.m. PDT to March 23 at 1 p.m. PDT. Roller Champions features two teams of three players, battling for possession of a ball and trying to complete laps around a banked track with it. Teams then cash in their points by throwing the ball through a hoop, which normally requires passing it amongst themselves to get around their opponents’ defense. The lap counter resets when the ball changes possession.
Roller Champions’ alpha is invitation only, but anyone who signs up will receive access to a closed beta later. This latest alpha comes about nine months after a closed pre-alpha demo that followed Roller Champions’ E3 reveal.
Developers with Ubisoft Montreal say the latest build will add in character customization options; new moves such as diving and flying tackles; and team moves where one player grapples on to a ballcarrier to zoom around the track and fend off attacks.
Roller Champions will also see environmental changes to the game’s arena, including curvature and elevation to “provide improved navigation and gameplay.” The closed alpha will show off Roller Champions’ latest arena, Chichen Itza, for the ancient Mayan city, along with two others.
The Roller Champions closed alpha will be available through uPlay for Windows PC. Progression will reset after the closed alpha, but participants will carry over an in-game cosmetic reward with the account they use. No full release date or window has been given for Roller Champions yet; the only platform mentioned so far is PC.
Update: Ubisoft mentioned today that Roller Champions will also launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and mobile devices.
